(6 days/5 nights)
The Rongai Route is the only route from the northern side oft he Kilimanjaro and leads relatively constant and direct to Kibo compared to the other routes. This route is one of the less famous routes thats why with a lot of luck you have the possibilities to see animals like buffalos, elephants and monkeys. During the first days you will have an amazing view over the Kenyan plateau and the Amboseli Natinaol Park. After summiting you will descend via the famous Marangu Route.
With your whole team you will make your way (4-5h drive) to the northern side of Kilimanjaro to the starting point of the Rongai Route (1950m). After weighing the luggage and registering in the National Park you will start your hike. The path will lead you along maize- and potato fields until you reach the pine forest. The way is ascending steadily up until you reach the moorland (2600m)where you will find the camp for the night - Sekimba Camp (2.700m)
After an energetic breakfast you will start your today’s hike of 17km by passing amazing views over the eastern ice fields and the Kibo. On your left side you will be followed the hackly Mawenzi up to your campsite for the night – Kikelewa Camp (3.600m). It is situated in a valley with stunning views over the plains and up to Mawenzi.
Your morning hike will be a short but steep ascend up to the grasslands where you will find an unforgettable panoramic view. Away from civilization you will leave flora and fauna behind you before reaching the next camp – Mawenzi Tarn Hut (3.115m). The afternoon you can relax or take little discovery hikes in the surrounding for a better acclimatization.
Today you will hike through the Alpine desert between Mawenzi and Kibo which seems like walking through moonscape. Interesting stone formations and desert flora will accompany you on your way to the next camp – School Hut (4.750m). The rest of the day will be used to regenerate your energy for the next night. Catch some sleep early.
Day 5 (Summit-night)
According to your guide you will start your ascend to the peak between 11pm and 1am. Equipped with head torch, some bites, tea and water you will take step by step slowly along a stony path to reach closer to your first goal – Gillman’a Point (5.685m). After a short break to see the rising sun over Mawenzi you will ascend further for another 3-4 hours up to Uhuru Peak (5985m) – the roof of Africa. After the important photo break and enjoying the scenic views you will descend by passing the great glaciers to Kibo Hut and further to Horombo Hut (3.725m) for the night.
After a resting night and a powerful breakfast you will descend to Mandara Hut for a short break before descending further through the rainforest until you reach the Marangu Gate. Here your transfer is waiting for you to bring you back to Moshi, where the well earned shower and bed is waiting for you.
