Marangu Route

Marangu Route

(6 days / 5 nights)

Also named ‘Coca Cola’-Route the Marangu Route is one of the most famous trails to climb Kilimanjaro. It is known as one of the easiest and also most comfortable routes since you are spending the nights in huts. In either 5 or 6 days you can reach the roof of Africa by hiking through amazing nature in the different zones and passing unforgettable views. Different to the other routes you are ascending and descending on the same route.

Day 1

After breakfast you start with your team by driving for about 1 hour to Marangu gate where you will be registered and the luggage will be divided out to the porters. You will start around lunchtime with ascending by hiking through the rainforest. You will see the typical rainforest flora and fauna and if you are a bit lucky you can see some long-tailed monkeys. After a short break and passing small waterfalls you reach within 3-4 hours your camp for the night – Mandara Hut (2.720m). Depending on the amount of climbers you might have to share the room with other people.

Day 2

With an early start to see the awaking nature you will hike with the disappearing morning fog over the moorland. The higher you get the less diverse the flora is. After about 3 hours you reach a nice spot for a break where you will have your first view on the rocky Mawenzi. From here you hike further up over rocky trails until you reach Horombo-Plateau where you find the camp for the night – Horombo Hut (3.720m). Here you can enjoy an amazing sundowner with a view on Kibo.

Day 3

Today is an Acclimatization day and you will wake up with a view over the clouds. Use the day to have a hike to the zebra rocks (about 1,5h) or to the Mawenzi saddle (about 2,5h) to walk high and sleep low. The rest of the day you can relax and enjoy the moments in the nature.

Day 4

With good weather the view on Kibo will accompany you during the todays hike. There are two possibilities – the lower trail (constant ascending slope – preferred by the majority) or the upper trail (more attractive landscape but also more exhausting). By passing the heathlands and springs you will reach after 5 to 6 hours the highest sleeping point – Kibo Hut (4.703m). After an early dinner and a briefing by the guide get some rest before the big night.

Day 5 (Summit-night)

After some tea and cookies you will start the peak night around midnight with your guide. Equipped with head torch, water and snacks you will hike a steep twisted trail until you reach Gillman’s Point (5.861m). Here you statistically reached the roof of Africa. Activate you reserved energies to hike for another 1 ½ hour until you reach Uhuru Peak – the top of Kilimanjaro (5.896m). Take a picture in front of the big sign and enjoy the views over the world under you. Afterwards you will start descending to Kibo Hut for a short break and than further to Horombo Hut (3.720m).

Day 6

The last day you are spending with descending down to the Marangu Gate. The hike is around 19 km and takes about 6-7 hours.
