This route is one of the most popular trails on Kilimanjaro and is also called ‘Whiskey Route’. The ascent from the western side along the southern circuit offers amazing scenery on your way to Uhuru Peak. During the descent via Mweka Route you will pass changing landscapes and unforgettable views over the Kilimanjaro-massif. With an additional day you will have better acclimatization and increase the chances to reach the roof of Africa.
With your team you’ll make your way to the Machame Gate which is about 45 min from Moshi where you have to register yourself in the national park, the luggage will be weighed and last things will be sorted. Your today’s hike will take about 6-7 hours through the remarkable rain forest zone to your first camp – Machame Camp(3.010m)
With an energetic breakfast you start your second day by hiking along magnificent flora and fauna for 5-6 hours through the heath ad moor zone. Especially the first part is quite steep to gain some altitude before you follow pleasant trails to Shira Camp(3.845m)
Today you follow the rule – walk high sleep low. After breakfast you make your way to the alpine desert passing the Lava Tower (4.430m) before descending to the Barranco Valley where you will see the first part of the next day hike – The Barranco Wall. Your camp for the night is Barranco Camp (3.960m).
You will start your day with ascending the famous ‘Barranco Wall’ which takes about 1-1 ½ hour and you already made half of your daily hike. Further on you will pass enchanting landscape and views up to Karanga Camp (3.970m). The afternoon you can relax or take small walks with your guide in the surroundings to enjoy the views in the valleys.
Today is another short day up to Barafu Camp (4.640m) which you will reach for lunch. On your way through the alpine desert you will pass rock formations and great views on Kibo will accompany you. The afternoon you will use for preparation and relaxing before an early night for the summit.
Day 6 – Summit Night
With the evaluation of your guide you will start summiting between 11:30pm and 1am after some bites and tea. In the darkness you will take step by step on rocky trails following the guides lead. With the first morning light you will reach Stella Point (5.740m) for a short break before ascending the final meters to the Uhuru Peak (5.895m). Time to enjoy the views and taking pictures before you start descending to Barafu Camp by passing breathtaking views over the glaciers. A short rest will give you the energy to go further until Mweka Camp (3.080m) – your camp for the night.
After a deep sleep and refilling your energies you will make the final descend to Mweka Gate where the transport will be ready to take you back to your accommodation.
